The "Pony Track" (Easiest route) Welcome to our Guided Ben Nevis Walks. Standing proudly at 1,345 meters, Ben Nevis is the highest peak in the UK, drawing outdoor enthusiasts from near and far. Embark on a memorable journey with our knowledgeable guides and unlock the secrets of this breathtaking landscape. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a novice, our guided walks promise an experience like no other.  We offer guided days via all routes: the easiest and most common being the Pony Track. So called because of its original purpose as a means of supplying a Victorian weather observatory and hotel; the ruins of which sit on the summit to this day.  The route is also commonly referred to as the "tourist track" or "mountain path".  Now, some 130,000 people venture onto the mountain each year. The majority of which by the pony track! The walk takes an approximate 6-10 hours and 17km with 1300m of vertical ascent. Despite this, it’s the home of sandwich stealing, bag raiding ravens, elegant dancing snow bunting, croaking Ptarmagin and the ancestral home of modern meteorology. When contrasted with the outrageous views, it makes for a day to remember! For Carn Mor Dearg please enquire.

Walking Season, Client Experience and Instructor/ Client Ratio. Ideal Walking Season: The best time to walk up Ben Nevis is during our summer walking season, which runs from May to September. This delightful period offers milder weather and stunning views (as well as the occasional summer rain…), allowing you to fully appreciate the breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. While winter can last anywhere from October to April (sometimes even May!) and certainly has its own charm, it can also bring unpredictable conditions that may require specialist gear and experience. Your Experience & Fitness Level: The most popular and easiest route is the “Pony Track” and is suitable for anyone who is fairly fit and healthy (harder routes available, contact us for details if you seek additional challenges!). If you’re used to regular walking and have a positive attitude, you’ll find this adventure both rewarding and achievable! The round trip typically takes 6-10 hours, covering 17 km and a vertical ascent of 1300m. Remember, the fitter you are, the more enjoyable and manageable the journey will be, but don't worry - our friendly guides are here to support you every step of the way! If you're considering a winter ascent, be prepared for a more challenging experience. The winter months can be breathtakingly beautiful, but they demand a higher level of fitness and some prior hill-walking experience. Warm clothing, ice axes, crampons, and sturdy, well-fitted boots are essential to navigate the diverse winter landscape safely. Our guides will ensure you have the expertise and care you need for a safe and exhilarating experience. Whether you choose the sunny summer trails or the serene winter wonderland, we’re here to make your Ben Nevis adventure truly memorable. Let’s take the first step towards reaching new heights together! Summer ratio: Up to 8 clients per instructor. Winter ratio: Up to 6 clients per instructor.

Guided Mountaineering on Ben Nevis – The North Face Experience Ben Nevis isn't just the highest mountain in the UK – it’s a fortress of alpine adventure, and its North Face holds some of the most dramatic and revered mountaineering terrain in the country. For those ready to move beyond the well-trodden Pony Track, we offer guided ascents via the classic North Face routes, each delivering a blend of history, exposure, and unforgettable highland grandeur. The North Face: Where Climbers Belong Unlike the more gradual southern slopes, the North Face of Ben Nevis is a towering labyrinth of rock ridges, gullies, and sweeping cliffs. It’s here that true mountaineering spirit is found – a place where skill, preparation, and adventure meet. These routes aren’t just paths – they’re journeys, shaped by the mountain’s character and steeped in climbing history. Classic North Face Routes We Guide Tower Ridge (500m Diff) Perhaps the most famous of all Ben Nevis routes, Tower Ridge is an absolute classic. First climbed in 1892, it follows a long, exposed line from the base of the mountain to the summit, weaving past iconic features like the Great Tower and Tower Gap. A guided ascent is the safest and most rewarding way to experience this truly alpine day out. North East Buttress (500m Diff) Wild, historic and steeped in character – the North East Buttress is one of the four great ridges of Ben Nevis. With sections like the infamous Mantrap and Forty Foot Corner, this is a journey for confident climbers who want a real taste of high mountain adventure. Carn Mor Dearg Arete (Grade 2) A stunning ridge traverse and the most accessible of the North Face options, CMD Arete begins with a climb up Carn Mor Dearg before curving in a graceful arc towards the summit of Ben Nevis. Perfect for fit hikers looking to step up from the Pony Track, this route offers exhilarating exposure and unbeatable views of the North Face cliffs. Ledge Route (Grade 2) A winter favourite that shines in summer too – Ledge Route offers a beautiful scramble up the mountain’s imposing face. Less technical than the classic ridges but no less rewarding, this route is ideal for adventurous hillwalkers wanting a gentler introduction to North Face mountaineering. Castle Ridge (350m Mod) Often overlooked, but never underestimated – Castle Ridge is the lowest of the great ridges, but still delivers a full mountaineering experience. With steep rock steps and big atmosphere, it’s an excellent route for building confidence before tackling bigger lines. For more specific routes like Observatory Ridge or rock climbing please get in touch.
