Scottish Mountaineering

It’s a bit of a cliché to call the rock climbing in Scotland "world-class"—but on the right day (dry and sunny, of course), it absolutely is. From towering sea stacks and mountain ridges to hidden Highland crags, Scotland offers some of the most adventurous, character-building rock climbing anywhere in the world.

What makes Scottish climbing truly special isn't just the routes—it's the ethos. The history, the strict ethics, the deep sense of exploration, and the local community's ability to embrace the “sub-optimal” with relentless optimism. It's no wonder so much of climbing's technical and cultural evolution has taken root here.

Mountains to explore on the Isle of Skye - Cuillin Ridge Traverse (Grade 3 / Moderate climbing) – The UK’s most demanding and prized mountaineering challenge: 12km of exposed ridge with 11 Munros, countless pinnacles, and incredible positions - Pinnacle Ridge (Grade 3) – A technical and photogenic route up Sgùrr nan Gillean - The Inaccessible Pinnacle (Grade 3/Mod) – The iconic needle summit of Sgùrr Dearg - Clach Glas – Blaven Traverse (Grade 3) – Often called “The Matterhorn of Skye” - Sgùrr nan Gillean via the Tourist Route (Grade 2/3) – A dramatic and exposed climb Sgùrr Alasdair via the Great Stone Chute (Grade 2) – The island’s highest peak, often snow-dusted and spectacular

"Rock, Ridge, and Sea — Scramble in Scotland."

Not sure what you're looking for? Here's some inspiration!

Are you a keen hillwalker ready to take the next step into steeper, more adventurous terrain? Maybe you’re dreaming of a classic ridge like Aonach Eagach, the Cuillin, or An Teallach—or looking to build the skills to move confidently through complex ground using ropes, good judgment, and solid technique.

Whether you're after a one-day intro to scrambling, a brush-up on ropework, or a multi-day mountaineering journey through Scotland’s most dramatic mountains, we tailor each experience to suit your goals, ability, and (of course!) the ever-changing Scottish weather.

Here are just a few examples of the experiences and instructional courses we can offer—designed to help you explore more safely, confidently, and independently.

Cuillin Ridge Munro Courses – 4 & 5 Day Options 4-Day Cuillin Ridge Munro Course This guided 4-day course is designed for those keen to tackle all 11 Munros along the iconic Black Cuillin Ridge on Skye. The route combines breathtaking landscapes with challenging scrambling terrain. To make the most of it, a solid fitness level is required, ideally around our Silver level (find out more here). Expect long days with plenty of scrambling on narrow, exposed ridges. Don’t worry, our guides will rope you up on technical sections to ensure your safety. Day 1: Sgùrr nan Eag, Sgùrr Dubh Mòr, Sgùrr Alasdair A great introduction to the ridge, we’ll traverse the southern end, enjoy stunning views, and head up to the main ridge via Coire Ghrunnda. Day 2: Sgùrr Mhic Choinnich, The Inaccessible Pinnacle (Inn Pinn), Sgùrr Na Banachdich A tough day involving the technical ascent of the Inaccessible Pinnacle, followed by Sgùrr Na Banachdich and descent via Coire a’Ghreadaidh. Day 3: Sgùrr A’Ghreadaidh, Sgùrr A’Mhadaidh A slightly shorter but still challenging day, with technical scrambling in the An Dorus gap, summiting both Munros before heading back. Day 4: Sgùrr Nan Gillean, Am Basteir, Bruach Na Frithe The final day involves tackling the famous “Bad Step” on Am Basteir and summiting Bruach Na Frithe before heading back down. 5-Day Cuillin Ridge Munro Course For those looking for a slightly less intense experience or a bit of flexibility, our 5-day course offers the same itinerary as the 4-day option, but with an extra day to ease the physical demands. This extra day provides a break on day three when legs often feel the strain or acts as a buffer in case of bad weather. Why choose 5 days? Extra day for rest or flexibility with weather More time to enjoy the spectacular scenery without the rush The 5th day is priced at a reduced rate, making it a cost-effective option for those needing a more relaxed pace. Both courses are led by experienced, qualified guides to ensure safety and enjoyment, making these trips perfect for both first-time Munro baggers and experienced mountaineers. Let us help you conquer the Black Cuillin’s most iconic peaks!

Cuillin Ridge Traverse Itinerary The Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye is hands down one of the most demanding and exhilarating mountaineering adventures in the UK. With 22 peaks, including 11 Munros, spread across 12 km, the traverse combines grade III scrambling and rock climbing up to Very Difficult/Severe standard. It's often compared to the Alps, and rightly so. Having successfully led many traverses of the ridge, I'm excited to help you tackle this iconic challenge. Reach out to take on the Cuillin! ITINERARY Please note: This itinerary is a guideline and may change based on weather, conditions, and the group's abilities. My goal is to make sure you get the best possible experience, no matter what nature throws our way. Day 1: Getting Started 05:00 – Meet at the Glen Brittle Campsite car park (I’m happy to arrange pick-up from your accommodation and take you to the start point.) We’ll kick things off with a walk into Gars-Bheinn, the official starting point of the Cuillin Ridge traverse. From here, we’ll begin our ascent, scrambling and climbing over some of the most stunning terrain in the UK. The objective for today is to summit seven peaks, including Sgurr Alasdair (the highest on the ridge) and the famous Inaccessible Pinnacle (Inn Pinn). After a thrilling day on the ridge, we’ll find a good spot to camp, watch the sunset, and relax under the stars. Day 2: The Northern Traverse 06:30 – Rise with the dawn, hopefully after a restful night under the open sky. Today, we’ll complete the northern section of the ridge. The terrain gets more complex and exciting as we approach Sgurr nan Gillean, the final Munro. The continuous scrambling, paired with incredible views down to Loch Coruisk, will keep you focused and energized. Once we reach Sgurr nan Gillean via its impressive west ridge, we’ll take a moment to celebrate before descending to the car park. It’s an iconic challenge, and finishing it will leave you with a real sense of accomplishment. 18:00 – Head back to the car park and return home, tired but happy from an unforgettable journey. Day 3: Weather Contingency Day On this day, we’ll be flexible based on the weather. If conditions have prevented us from bivouacking on the ridge, we’ll focus on completing individual sections of the traverse. This allows us to get the most out of the course, regardless of the weather, while making sure you get the best possible experience on the Cuillin. The Cuillin Ridge traverse is a bucket-list challenge for any mountaineer, and I’m here to help you achieve it. With the right guidance and support, you’ll experience some of the UK’s most spectacular and technical terrain, all while pushing your limits and creating unforgettable memories. Let’s make this dream a reality!

Inaccessible Pinnacle (Inn Pinn) - Sgurr Dearg Itinerary The Inaccessible Pinnacle (Inn Pinn) on Sgurr Dearg is one of the most iconic and thrilling climbs in the UK, renowned for its dramatic exposure and technical challenge. This is the ultimate scramble for those looking to test their skills on a world-famous peak. With the right guidance, it’s a challenge that’s achievable and incredibly rewarding. Here’s a suggested itinerary to help you conquer this legendary mountain! Day 1: Approach and Ascent of the Inaccessible Pinnacle 08:00 – Meet at the Glen Brittle Campsite Car Park (I can arrange a pick-up from your accommodation, if needed.) We’ll start our day early to make the most of the daylight. After a briefing, we’ll make our way to Coire a’Ghreadaidh, the base of Sgurr Dearg. This is the ideal approach to tackling the Inaccessible Pinnacle. 09:30 – Begin the Ascent to the Base of the Inn Pinn The walk-in takes us through the rugged terrain of Coire a’Ghreadaidh, with stunning views along the way. It’s a steady approach, giving us time to warm up and get in the zone for the climb. As we reach the base of Sgurr Dearg, we’ll take a moment to admire the imposing presence of the Pinnacle, standing tall against the sky. 11:00 – Scrambling up to the Inaccessible Pinnacle This section is where the real adventure begins! We’ll scramble up the technical rock of Sgurr Dearg, tackling sections of exposed scrambling along the way. As we reach the Inaccessible Pinnacle, it’s time to rope up and get ready for the final climb. 12:30 – Summit the Inaccessible Pinnacle The Inn Pinn is a true mountaineering challenge, requiring a steady hand, good footwork, and the ability to stay calm in exposed situations. The pinnacle is a narrow, sharp ridge with dramatic views over the Isle of Skye. Reaching the summit will feel like a true achievement, offering one of the most rewarding views in the UK. 13:30 – Descend and Return to Base After summiting, we’ll safely descend the Pinnacle using ropes for security. The descent can be tricky, but with the right technique and guidance, it’s a manageable and enjoyable part of the climb. We’ll retrace our steps back to Coire a’Ghreadaidh and then begin the walk back down to the car park. 15:30 – Return to Glen Brittle Campsite Car Park After an exhilarating day of climbing, we’ll return to the car park to wrap up. You’ll leave with a sense of pride, having conquered one of the UK’s most famous summits. Optional Extension for a Multi-Day Trip: If you’re looking for a more relaxed pace or to further explore the Cuillin, this itinerary can be extended to include nearby peaks like Sgurr Alasdair or the full traverse of Sgurr Dearg. Additional days could also include other classic ridges and scrambles in the Cuillin range, like Sgurr Mhic Choinnich or Sgurr nan Gillean. This itinerary is ideal for those looking to focus on the Inaccessible Pinnacle with a solid climb that’s as much about technique as it is about courage. With my guidance, you’ll be prepared to take on the challenge with confidence, and most importantly, enjoy the incredible views from one of Scotland’s most iconic peaks.
